Hello, I've been lurking for a few years and finally joined; this is my first post so hopefully it works correctly. Anyways Rock Island Arsenal is near my home and this interesting artillery piece is displayed there. It's the M2A2 TerraStar, a 105mm howitzer built by Lockheed during the Vietnam War.
The TerraStar had two "pyramids-of-wheels" with three tires each. It could be towed like a regular gun with the "pyramids" locked and the bottom tires free-spinning.
Or, it could drive itself with both the tires and entire tire-pyramids moving! A small diesel engine with fold-out chair (stowed inside the black box on the right guntrail in the photo) powered it. A seventh tire on the guntrail balance the whole thing when it was moving itself. Obviously it couldn't go fast but it could reposition to duck counterfire, etc.
The project was killed by the Carter administration. One prototype was scrapped, the other is at RIA.
Later that day, I was talking to some old-timer at a music festival in Davenport and he said that Lockheed had a whole series of vehicles planned using the TerraStar concept. Anybody know anything about these?
